Playwriting: A Risky Business - Colleen Murphy

Colleen Murphy is a playwright, filmmaker and librettist.  In 2014, she won the Carol Bolt Award for her play Pig Girl and was also shortlisted for the Siminovitch Prize in Theatre.  Her play The December Man (L'homme de décembre) won the 2007 Governor General's Literary Award for Drama, the CAA/Carol Bolt Award and the Enbridge Playwrights Award.  Other plays include Armstrong's War, The Goodnight Bird, Beating Heart Cadaver (nominated for a 1999 Governor General's Literary Award for Drama) The Piper, Down in Adoration Falling and All Other Destinations are Cancelled.  She won awards in the CBC Literary Competition and her distinct films have played in festivals around the world.

Colleen is currently the 2014-17 Lee Playwright in Residence at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.  In 2011/12, she was the Canadian Playwright-in-Residence at Finborough Theatre in London, U.K., as well as Playwright-in-Residence at Factory Theatre in Toronto.  She has been Writer-in-Residence at the University of Guelph, Wilfred Laurier University, McMaster  University and at the Universityh of Regina.

Upcoming: Armstrong's War at the Sudbury Theatre Centre in October 2016; Bright Burning, a U of A commission for the 2017 graduating BFA class, at a the Timms Centre in Edmonton; Oksana G. at Tapestry Opera in Toronto in May 2017, and The Breathing Hole premiering at the Stratford Festival in 2017.
