Expertise and former areas of study:

Stephen retired in 2019. Prior to entering academia, he worked in industry as a petroleum geochemist and prior to that worked as a field-based petroleum geologist, typically on overseas assignments in South America, Europe, the Middle East, Scandinavia and North America.

Stephen served the Department of Geology, University of Regina for over 29 years as both a Faculty Member and as Department Head. During that time, he delivered numerous service, elective and core undergraduate and graduate classes, and trained both Masters and Doctoral candidates.

Stephen authored and co-authored publications on coal-related and petroleum systems research, and served on numerous national and international committees in various executive and leadership roles.

A known ‘innovator’, Stephen pioneered numerous teaching stratagems, delivering professional short courses for the AAPG, GSA and SGS, delivered a graduate-level class in China, and delivered instructional workshops for both professors and teachers. In 2016 Stephen was recognized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for leadership in geoscience education as the 2016 recipient of the AAPG Professorial Award. In 2011 he received the University of Regina Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching.
