The Holocene Eruption History of Mount Churchill and the White River Ash identity crisis
Britta J.L. Jensen, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alberta
Mount Churchill, near the Alaska-Yukon border, is part of the Wrangell volcanic field and the
source of the well-known “White River Ash”, which actually represents (at least) two major
eruptions around ~1600 and ~1100 years ago. Although the White River Ash represents one of the
largest Holocene eruptions in North America, very little is known about the eruption history of
this volcano, and it remains unmonitored. For this talk I will explore the history of the Mount
Churchill and White River Ash story, and how recent research is starting to suggest this volcano
has been much more active in the last 11,000 years than previously thought.
This lecture is part of the Hutchinson Medal Lecture Tour for 2022-2023. The W.W. Hutchison
Medal is named after Dr. William W. Hutchison (1935-1987) in recognition of his many
contributions to the Geological Association of Canada and to Canadian and international
geoscience. The medal is awarded to a young individual for recent exceptional advances in
Canadian earth science research and is designed to celebrate Hutchinson’s belief in
communicating science across the country by supporting a lecture tour.
