Abstract:

During the week of November 20th to Nov 26th, 2022 I had the privilege to be part of an Erasmus Mobility for Academic Staff program at the Universidad del Pais Vasco in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. The host of the program was Dr. Mikel Lopez-Horgue and kindly allowed me to attend two of the classes he teaches (Introductory Geology in Spanish and Sedimentary Geology in Basque) and showed me some of their teaching methods. During the week, I was extremely fortunate to take part in two field trips; one field trip was to Pozzalagua to see Aptian hydrothermal dolomites and the other trip was to the Sopelana and Gorrondatxe-Hondartza beaches to see Eocene sedimentation along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Apart from the academic side of the trip, I had the chance to notice, even briefly, the student life in the university.

No trip is complete without the cultural aspect. Consequently, I did took the opportunity to take in some cultural sightseeing such as a few km of the Camino de Santiago and the Old Centre. But one thing that impressed me was the ingenuity of the people to make their city accessible to everyone. Bilbao is built on Cretaceous terrigenous flysch-type sediments prone to mass wasting and consequently they have taken extensive measures to protect the buildings and the highways. Also, because the city is built on the slopes of the mountain, they have escalators on the steeply inclined streets, elevators to create accessible shortcuts, stairs going in all directions, football fields and tennis courts under the highways, and playgrounds in “bubbles”, just to name of few. I am excited to share with you my experience in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain!

ALL are welcome.
