GEOL 240 - Earth System History, GEOL 241 - Paleontology, GEOL 490AI - Environmental Micropalentology, GEOL 490AK - Quaternary Environments

Research interests
Paleontology; Quaternary Geology

B.Sc. Geology (EAFIT University, Colombia); M.Res. (University of Edinburgh, U.K.); Ph.D. (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands).

Expertise and areas of study:

Dr. Maria Velez's expertise is mainly in the field of Paleontology and Quaternary Geology. Her main area of research is on paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstruction of Quaternary environments using diatoms, isotopes and sediments. The main focus is on the understanding of the impact of natural (climatic) and anthropogenic forces on aquatic ecosystems. Her current projects include: Pleistocene/Holocene environmental and climatic change in the Neotropics; Environmental effect of Spanish colonization in the Neotropics; Extreme climatic events in Saskatchewan during the Holocene, and Cretaceous microfossils of Saskatchewan. Dr. Velez has also worked on lower Paleozoic trilobites of Gondwana.

Courses taught:

GEOL 201. Internal Processes of the Earth. This course examines the internal processes of the earth and its constitutive materials. It treats the earth as a dynamic system where cycles and processes are linked and influence each other. It will attend to rock cycles, composition, and formation, stratigraphy, the geological time scale and plate tectonics, while highlighting throughout scientific knowledge about these matters is produced.

GEOL 241. Paleontology. This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge about the main groups of invertebrate fossils, their taxonomy and systematic classification. The course examines methods of classification of species, the stratigraphic distribution of the main group of fossils, the mechanisms of biological evolution, modes of fossilization and preservation of fossils, and the different uses of fossils. It attends briefly as well to matters of paleoecology and paleobiogeography.

GEOL 240. Earth’s Systems History.  This course is designed to provide students with knowledge about the evolution of the Earth, in other words with the Earth’s big history. The first part of the course examines the Earth as a big system and each one of its main sub-systems. The second part examines the major geological and biological events over the course of geologic time. From the undergraduate calendar: “Inter-connected evolution of atmosphere-biosphere-lithosphere over the course of geologic time, its forcing mechanisms, interactions, and feedbacks. Major physical and biological global events emphasizing North America and Western Canada”.

GEOL 396. Field School - I. 2008-2010.

GEOL 414. Geology of Siliciclastic rocks. This course examines the depositional models using modern sedimentary analogues to interpret ancient environments. Through this course students will acquire knowledge about the structural and compositional characteristics of siliclastic rocks, main depositional environments and will develop skills on reconstruction of past depositional environments.

GEOL 490 AK. Quaternary Environments. This course introduces the student into general aspects of the Quaternary Period. It will review subjects related to why it is important to study the Quaternary, in other words, its relevance, what are the main methodologies employed to reconstruct Quaternary environments (how we know what we know) and the main climate oscillations, its causes and impacts on ecosystems. It will attend also to aspects of environmental change caused by human activities and the importance of paleo-environmental reconstructions in the conservation and management of natural ecosystems.

GEOL 400 AI. Quaternary micropaleontology. This course has several objectives: (1) to familiarize the student with the two main applications of micropaleontology: environmental and biostratigraphic (geologic) and (2) to familiarize the student with basic taxonomy of foraminifera and diatoms. At the end of this course the student will be able to (1) recognize the main groups of diatoms and forams (2) know their main application and (3) know how to start basic research in micropaleontology.
