Mathematics Honours Student wins Governor General’s Academic Silver Medalist and University Prize in Science

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to announce that Saeid Hooshyar has earned the Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal and the University Prize in Science at the Spring 2024 Convocation!

Every year, the Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal recognizes the most distinguished undergraduate student earning their first degree in the past year, and the University Prize in Science recognizes the most distinguished undergraduate student graduating with their first degree in the Faculty of Science. With a cumulative grade point average of 96.62%, Saeid has earned a Bachelor of Science High Honours in Mathematics with a minor in Psychology where he has been the recipient of over 10 prestigious awards including the Saskatchewan Innovation Undergraduate Scholarship (2022), the James B. Carefoot Memorial Scholarship (2022), and the Academic Gold Scholarship (2020-2023).

His honours research examined Crouzeix’s Conjecture, an open problem in matrix analysis, which predicts the upper bound for the norm of the spectral operator 2-norm. After convocation, Saeid will be joining the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as a graduate student under the supervision of Dr. Remus Floricel this fall!
