Research Week Showcase: Dr. James McVittie

06 November 2024

For the UofR's Research Week, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is excited to showcase Dr. James McVittie and his research as an NSERC Discovery Grant 2024 recipient!

Dr. James McVittie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Regina. He completed his Ph.D. in Statistics from McGill University in Winter 2022. Later that year, he joined the University of Regina and has been a Statistical Society of Canada committee member for New Investigators since 2023.

Dr. McVittie’s research program is based in Survival Analysis and focuses on the development of statistical methods that are applicable to different types of partially observed duration data that are combined. This involves taking established modelling procedures for individual sets of data and manipulating them so that they are applicable to multiple sets of data, simultaneously. His work has been applied to model the duration of Montreal hospital stays, mortality of wildlife populations and survival with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. He will present various aspects of his current research program at the 2025 Lifetime Data Science Conference (LiDS) conference in New York.

His most recent research students include an MSc student, Himansi Kumari, who is working on estimating the impact of variables on the risk of failure with Parkinson’s disease using current lifetime data, and an NSERC USRA summer student, Emily Erick, who worked on nonparametric Bayesian estimation techniques that are applicable to combined cohort data.

For any students, faculty members, or researchers who are interested in learning more about Dr. McVittie's research activities, please see his website or contact him via email at james.mcvittie@uregina.ca.
