SGI Assistant Professor in Data Science
Dr. Affan Shoukat joins the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as a SGI Assistant Professor of Data Science. His research focuses on developing data science methods combined with traditional modelling to address key questions in epidemiology, infectious diseases, and public health. Affan also has significant expertise in scientific programming and high performance computing including building, training, and deploying models in distributed computing environments. The innovative and intersectional nature of his research has led to key accomplishments including several high-impact publications that evaluate policy implications on global health. Affan obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics in 2019 from the York University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Disease Modelling and Analysis at Yale University. After his postdoc, he returned to Toronto where he worked as a research data scientist at Bluedot, a start-up enterprise that develops artificial intelligence models to derive public health insights from epidemiological, clinical, and medical data.
Affan is excited to join the University of Regina and establish a collaborative research program lab with faculty and students in the department. His hobbies include playing the drums, running, and playing sports.
Welcome to the department, Affan! We are excited for you to join the UofR Data Science program!
