2025 Canadian Mathematical Society Fellow
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to announce that Dr. Douglas Farenick has been named a 2025 Canadian Mathematical Society Fellow! This fellowship recognizes CMS members who have made excellent contributions in mathematical research, teaching or exposition as well as having distinguished themselves in service to Canada’s mathematical community.
Dr. Farenick has had a distinguished career as a professor of mathematics and Dean of the faculty of science here at the U of R having published two books, 50+ refereed journal articles as well as having delivered numerous research lectures in Canada and abroad. His research area is in operator algebra with a focus in noncommutative convexity, Toeplitz operators and matrices, local multiplier algebras, operator systems and algebras and quantum probability measures. In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Farenick has an extensive record in the instruction of mathematical courses ranging from 1st year undergraduate linear algebra and precalculus to doctoral courses in Lie groups, functional analysis and operator algebras. He has also contributed extensively to the Canadian mathematical community through his roles as a board member on different councils (TRIUMF, PIMS, CMS), co-editor in chief of the Operators and Matrices journal and President of the Canadian Council of Deans of Science.
