Celebrate Pi Day with the Math and Stats Department

09 March 2025

Every year, the Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Statistics Student Society (MASS) celebrates Pi Day, a day filled with mathematics-themed festivities to publicize the contributions of mathematics in our everyday lives as well as to highlight the research interests of the faculty and students in math-related fields. For the last few years these festivities have included the giveaway of free pie to all students, a pie-eating contest, and special math lectures given throughout the day in the RIC Atrium!

One of the lecturers this year is Manak Singh, a PhD student in the Math & Stats Department, who will be presenting a talk titled, “The Obsession with Pi”. His abstract is as follows:

Pi is one of the most famous irrational numbers, capturing the public’s imagination like no other, arguably surpassing even the golden ratio and Euler’s number in recognition. For millennia, both experts and amateurs alike have devised ingenious approximations, some of which have even been etched into tombstones. Mnemonics to recall its digits are common, and Pi Day is celebrated in schools and beyond. This number seems to inspire behaviors that are almost irrational. In this talk, I explore the history behind pi’s unique allure, delving into how and why it continues to fascinate and provoke such an intense cultural obsession.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics wishes to invite all students, staff, and faculty to join MASS in their celebrations at the RIC Atrium, so be sure you mark your calendars!
