Stela Popa

Conservatory Instructor
Piano, Suzuki Piano

In Her Studio:

Stela Popa teaches piano with the Conservatory. Lessons with Stela cost $60 per hour of instruction. She is accepting students at this time. Stela will teach students ages 4 and up, and enjoys teaching any level of student, including teens and adults. In Stela’s studio, students are encouraged to work towards exams and participate in music festival, and strongly encouraged to participate in recitals. She will teach nearly any genre of music - if there's a book, Stela will teach/play it! Stela requires students to supply their own books, with her guidance, and to have a piano to practice on at home – if the student doesn’t already have one, Stela prefers to discuss with students before they acquire one. An acoustic piano is the preferred choice. She expects her students to practice 30 minutes every day - little ones can work up to it. She requires 45 minute lessons, even for beginners.

Biography:

Stela Popa was born and educated in Romania where she earned a Masters Degree in Piano from Iassy Conservatory/University in 1973. In 1983 she moved to Regina where she was introduced to Dr. Suzuki’s Talent Education method of teaching piano. She loved the fact that in Suzuki teaching parents are a big part of the program, helping the students at home with daily practicing.

She became an accredited Suzuki piano teacher in 1986. In keeping with Dr. Suzuki’s principles of lifelong teacher education she took countless summer institutes and workshops across North America to study with masters from Japan, the U.S.A., and Canada. For the last several years Stela has been the president of the Saskatchewan Suzuki Piano Teachers Association, as well as being actively involved with the Regina Suzuki Piano Association.

After teaching piano both traditionally and by the Suzuki Method at Sisters of Our Lady of Mission Music Studio for a few years, Stela joined the Conservatory of Performing Arts in 2005.

Stela is dedicated to her students and works hard to help the parents and the students in their piano playing and practicing skills.
