Modified Guidelines for Thesis Defence in Response to COVID-19 (until further notice)

Modified Guidelines for Thesis Defence in Response to COVID-19 (until further notice)

Deadlines:

For a student who submits a ready-to-defend thesis before April 15, 2020 and will defend no later than May 31, 2020, the tuition fee for spring/summer semester will be waived. If the ready-to-defend thesis is not submitted by April 15 and defended by May 31, students will be required to register for Spring/Summer 2020.

Defences:

  1. A Master’s/PhD thesis defence may be delivered through alternate mechanisms for defence.
    1. The Candidate, supervisor(s), committee members and the chair of the defence can all participate at a distance.
    2. The approach of presence for each participant should be indicated through the notice of defence. A modified version of Notice of Oral Defense of Thesis form is linked.
    3. The candidate and supervisor should make the request in advance to allow the academic unit or provide Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) with sufficient time to set up the defence at a distance and to make sure every participant is familiar with the system.
      1. For master’s defence, each academic unit will be responsible to set up the online system.
      2. For PhD defence, FGSR will set it up.
    4. Participation requirements will follow the regular guideline regardless of mode.

Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Please submit requests to grad.defense@uregina.ca.
