Program Overview

The Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Regina is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE-ACFTS).

The MSW program is designed to enable students to undertake a variety of responsibilities in management, policy formulation, program consultation, planning, research roles, and advanced direct social work practice within human services.

Fundamental to the program is an emphasis on integrative analysis as a means of understanding the manner in which social research, direct social work practice, social policy development, and social administration are interrelated.

Program Options

  • Thesis (30 credit hours)
  • Field Education (30 credit hours)

The thesis option requires six courses, including two research courses, two electives, a thesis proposal course, and a thesis.

The field education option requires nine courses, including two research courses, four electives, a field education (450 placement hours) along with a field education seminar, and a reflective practice portfolio course.

Program Length

Full-time students can complete the program in two years. Students have a maximum of five years to complete the thesis program and six years to complete the field education program.

Program Completion Options

We offer both full-time and part-time studies.

For the Field Education option, placements (450 hours) and seminars are only available in Fall and Winter terms and must be completed on a full-time basis

Course Delivery Methods

Most of our courses are delivered through hybrid, blended (a combination of synchronous virtual class meetings and asynchronous online work), and remote methods (synchronous virtual classes), allowing students to complete the program remotely.

*International students: please note that only about 10% of classes is delivered in-person in a classroom. IRCC requires at least 50% of your study program through in-person classes to be eligible for the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

Internet Access

All students admitted to the MSW program must have access to computer and high speed internet for the duration of their program of studies in order to participate in courses delivered by web based learning, and for program administration purposes. Students are also expected to participate in an online orientation prior to program commencement, and attend online seminars held each semester.

Admission Requirements

  • Attainment of a BSW
  • A qualifying graduating average of 70%
  • At least two years demonstrated professional experience in the human service field
  • Two written references, preferably one professional reference and one academic reference

The MSW Program is offered through the Faculty of Social Work but it is formally a program of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR). For further details on MSW admission requirements, please visit the FGSR website.
