English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is specially designed for students to achieve English Proficiency in order to enrol in undergraduate classes at the University of Regina.
Use EAP 100 and 101 Towards Undergraduate Programs
Successful completion of EAP 100 and 101 satisfies the English Language Proficiency requirement for the University of Regina and other educational institutions located in Saskatchewan. As a newly admitted student or a current student studying at the U of R, focusing on your English-language skills is an important part of your U of R education. Talk to an advisor to learn more.
Academic and Social Opportunities
Learning academic English will provide you essential skills for postsecondary studies, such as helping you understand lectures and participating in discussions during your undergraduate courses.
Knowing English allows you to engage more fully in campus life, join clubs and make friends. A supportive network at university is important for all students. Plus, at the U of R, we have an ESL Friends program where you volunteer your time to help other students in the program adapt to university lifestyle. You can volunteer or reach out to an ESL friend as part of your journey.
Learn English on Campus or Remotely
- Classes are held on campus with a small average class size of 20 students.
- Start your studies from home at times to suit your schedule. Remote EAP courses can be taken while your student visa is being processed.
Accredited Instructors
Our EAP program is accredited by Languages Canada and all U of R ESL instructors are accredited by TESL Canada. Our programs and instructors create an optimal learning environment for students at all levels.
Apply Anytime
We accept application throughout the year; however, it's recommended you meet the priority deadline to ensure the best service, opportunities for enrolment and other ESL services. Admission is administered on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend students apply as soon as possible to ensure a spot in the program.

EAP 100 and 101 for Credit in Your Degree Program
EAP 100 and 101 are considered credit courses and can be used as an elective in some U of R degree programs.
If you are already an undergraduate student of the U of R, please complete the Undergraduate Student Application Form (PDF) and email a completed copy to esl@uregina.ca.
Undergraduate students will require permission from their primary faculty and the ESL program to be registered in EAP courses. Admission to the EAP Program does not constitute admission to degree programs at the University of Regina.
EAP Tuition and Fees
EAP tuition details are available on the Undergraduate Tuition and Fee Schedule.
- The fees are based on the cost of two standard classes and include mandatory charges such as:
- the Student Union Fee,
- Student Health and Wellness Fee,
- Student Union Bus Pass,
- and Academic Technologies Fees.
Direct Entry Options Available
Direct Entry into EAP 030, EAP 090 and EAP 100 is available depending on your English Language Proficiency test score.
Not attending the U of R but need an ELP Placement test? Our convenient online placement exam is available for entry into any Saskatchewan education institution.
EAP + 1 Option
EAP + 1 gives you the opportunity to take an undergraduate course while taking EAP 100 and/or 101.Apply for Housing
Applicants are responsible for securing their own housing. However, the University of Regina offers a variety of on-campus options. Please refer to our Housing website for complete information.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can be admitted to the U of R's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program if you meet the following criteria:
- Are 16 years of age or older. If you are under 16, you may be considered for admission, but require speical permission from the CCE Dean.
The EAP Placement Exam, or other approved placement exam, must be completed within two (2) years of the date of your application to the EAP Program. You will be asked to provide proof of placement on your application.
About Direct Entry
At the University of Regina, you can enter directly into EAP 030, EAP 090 or EAP 100 and 101 with minimum test scores on approved placement exams.
Entry into 030 Vantages 2
Enter directly into the 030 Vantages 2 level if you:
- submit proof of an overall IELTS (Academic) Band score of 5.0 (with no band score lower than 4.5) or
- submit proof of a Duolingo score of 90
Entry into 090 High Intermediate
Enter directly into the 090 High Intermediate level if you:
- submit proof of an overall IELTS (Academic) Band score of 5.5 (with no band lower than 5.0) or
- submit proof of a Duolingo score of 100
Entry into 100 or 101 Advanced
Enter directly into EAP 100 and 101 if you:
- achieve an overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 (with no band score lower than 5.0) or higher or
- achieve a TOEFL iBT score of 70 (with no skill below 17) or higher or
- achieve a TOEFL paper-based score of 525 or higher
- submit proof of a Duolingo score of 100 or higher
- submit a CAEL score of 50 or higher
* All scores are valid for two (2) years from the date of the exam.
Placement options assess students' current proficiency levels for initial course placement and are not intended for advancing students to higher levels once they have been placed.

Pat Moir Award
- Value: $250
- Awarded in the fall, winter and spring terms
- No application required
- Eligibility - ESL students who meet the following criteria:
- successfully completed Advanced EAP 100 within the previous academic year,
- admitted to an undergraduate program at the U of R, and
- registered and remains registered a minumum of 3 credit hours in the term the award is presented.
- Academic achievement will based on final grades and attendance in Advanced EAP.
- Preference will be given to graduates of ESL +1.
All Saints Anglican Bursary
- Value: $1,000 will be presented annually in the winter term
- Awarded once each year
- Application deadline: September 30
- Eligibility: ESL students who demonstrate financial need
- Preference will be given to students with refugee or permanent resident status.
There are five levels to the EAP program.
010 - Foundations 2
Foundations 2 is an intensive English language level for speakers of languages other than English who can communicate concrete, personal and everyday topics in conversation and writing. This course focusses on developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills using concrete common and familiar topics at the elementary level. Vocabulary and grammar components are also integrated into the lessons. The course includes a seminar. Note: Students must pass the seminar to pass the course.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 005 or Foundations 2 level EAP Placement Test Scores.
020 - Vantages 1
Vantages 1 is an intensive English language level for speakers of languages other than English who can communicate using concrete common and familiar topics in conversation or in writing. This course focusses on developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills using somewhat simple general knowledge at the intermediate level. Vocabulary and grammar components are also integrated into the lessons. The course includes a seminar. Note: Students must pass the seminar to pass the course.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 010 or Vantages 1 level EAP Placement Test Scores
030 - Vantages 2
Vantages 2 is an intensive English language level for speakers of languages other than English who can communicate simple general knowledge orally or in writing. This course focusses on developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills using somewhat complex general knowledge at the intermediate level. Vocabulary and grammar components are also integrated into the lessons. The course includes a Grammar and Writing seminar or a Communications seminar. Note: Students must pass the seminar to pass the course.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 020 or Vantages 2 EAP Placement Test Scores or Direct Entry into EAP 030 level.
090 - High Intermediate
090 - High Intermediate is an intensive English language level for speakers of languages other than English who communicate using somewhat complex general knowledge. This course focuses on moderately complex and abstract academic skill development in listening, peaking, reading and writing for moderately complex and abstract topics. The course includes a Writing seminar. Note: Students must pass the seminar to pass the course.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 030 or High Intermediate EAP Level Placement Test Scores or Direct Entry to EAP High Intermediate Level
100 - Advanced
This course covers interesting and often controversial topics while developing advanced academic reading, listening and speaking skills for complex and abstract topics. It includes academic integrity, critical thinking and study skill.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 090 or EAP Advanced Level EAP Placement Test Scores or Direct Entry to EAP Advanced Level or permission of the department
Co-requisite: EAP 101 in order to complete the level and satisfy the University English Language Proficiency requirement for admission to University degree programming.
Note: Fully-admitted students can register in EAP 100 with permission of the Dean of CCE and their Faculty.
101 - Advanced
This course presents formal academic or professional writing and research skill development for advanced English language learners using complex and abstract topics.
Prerequisite: Completion of EAP 090 or EAP Advanced Level Placement Test Scores or Direct Entry to EAP Advanced Level or permission of the department.
Co-requisite: EAP 100 in order to complete the level and satisfy the University English Language Proficiency requirement for admission to University degree programming
Notes:
- Fully-admitted students can register in EAP 101 with permission of the Dean of CCE and their Faculty.
- Students may receive credit for one of EAP 101 or RDWT 120
EAP + 1 Information and Guidelines
English for Academic Purposes + 1 (EAP + 1)
EAP + 1 gives you the opportunity to take an undergraduate course before finishing the EAP Academic Program.
If you are in Advanced EAP and if you qualify, you may join EAP + 1 and take one undergraduate course while still studying in the EAP Academic Program.
Note: Admitted students can take EAP 100 and EAP 101 as part of a degree program. Talk to the ESL office or your faculty advisor.

- Students who fail Advanced EAP but pass the university credit course will only receive transfer credit for the University course after passing Advanced EAP.
- Students who drop or are discontinued from Advanced EAP will automatically be discontinued from the U of R course.
