English as a Second Language

You can begin your studies from home at times to suit your schedule. Remote, non-credit ESL courses can be taken without a student visa, or while yours is being processed.

There are fun, on-line cultural activities planned to introduce you to the city and help you feel at home in our university.

Learn English on Campus

The ESL program offers:

  • 13 weeks of classes per term
  • 3 terms per year
  • 252 hours of instruction per term

Core Classes: 15 hours per week
Skill Classes: 6 hours per week

Classes are held on campus with an average class size of 16 students.

Core and Skill Classes

Core classes integrate all language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing, through a theme-based curriculum.

Skill classes focus on specific language skills.

Fast Track

Fast Track is an intensive, condensed version of the Academic Program's Level 020 (EFST 020) and Level 030 (EFST 030). These courses are intended for highly motivated and dedicated learners who would like to accelerate their progress through the ESL program.

To take Fast Track 30, you must have successfully completed Level 020, or attempted Level 030 within the last 2 semesters of the Academic Program. Placement into Level 030 is not sufficient to study in the Fast Track 30 program. To take Fast Track 20, you must have successfully completed Level 010, or attempted Level 020 within the last 2 semesters of the Academic Program. Placement into Level 020 is not sufficient to study in the Fast Track 20 program.

We accept application throughout the year. However the priority deadline is the recommended deadline to ensure best service and opportunities for enrollment and other ESL services. Registration is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are recommended to apply as soon as possible to ensure a spot in the program.

All U of R ESL Instructors are accredited by TESL Canada.

Qualified instructors and small class sizes create an optimal learning environment for students at all levels.

Placement Test

You will take a placement test during the first week to determine which Core Class will best suit your current level of English.

This test includes listening, speaking, reading and writing.
