Halis (Steve) obtained his B.A. in English Language Teaching in 1986, and has been teaching ever since. As a teacher, he realizes the importance of lifelong learning and has successfully completed many other ESL-related programs, receiving his DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) at Cambridge University, MA in TESOL at the University of Canberra, and TESL Level 3 Certificate (TESL Canada Federation)

Before joining the U of R ESL Program, Halis had worked at several universities, colleges and language schools both in Canada and abroad, including the International House in Vancouver, where he served as a TESL and CELTA teacher-trainer.

Halis feels privileged to be a part of the ESL team at the U of R, believing he still has a lot to learn from his co-workers. He enjoys teaching, which he views as a great opportunity to work with new students and help them to meet their learning needs. 

Halis’s special interest is in teacher training and second-language acquisition. To him, fostering a positive learning environment for learners is of utmost importance in order to achieve success, which is why he is dedicated to make learning fun and to establish a strong rapport with students.

In his free time, Halis enjoys travelling and many outdoor activities, such as swimming, skiing and camping.
