As part of Brain Awareness Week, the Centre on Aging and Health at the U of R will have a guest speaker from Toronto talk about helping people with dementia.

Dr. Mark Chignell, who has a doctorate in mathematical psychology and a master’s in engineering, is professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at the U of T. He will be presenting the Brain Awareness Lecture. The title of his presentation is Creating a Sense of Purpose with Meaningful Tasks: How Can Technology Improve Quality of Life in People with Dementia?

He will talk about how appropriately-designed technology can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia, and how they can be provided with meaningful activities and engaging interactions.

In his talk, Chignell will discuss the development and evaluation of improving the quality of life for people with dementia by creating a sense of purpose with meaningful tasks. One of the ways is through an Ambient Activities technology that is based on Montessori principles and provides a personalized experience to people with dementia. The technology was developed in the Interactive Media Laboratory at the U of T using an iterative design approach.

Chignell’s talk coincides with Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign to increase public awareness on the progress and benefits of brain research. The event represents a joint partnership of the Centre on Aging and Health, University of Regina and the AGE WELL Network of National Centres of Excellence.
