What’s in a name? Plenty.

For centuries, names have been used to create images and convey reputations for all kinds of products and institutions.

Now, the University of Regina is asking for help from alumni, faculty, staff, students and the wider community to help come up with names for the residences.

Construction is finishing up a new 606-bed residence on campus – and the building needs a name.

This is also an ideal time to also come up with new names for the North Residence and the South Residence buildings, as well as the residential area in the College West building.

There are a few guidelines for your suggested names:
• Themes should be descriptive of the building, function, location or usage
• Names and themes cannot include names of individuals
• Submissions should be representative of the university, residence, and/or community
• Submissions should not infringe on any existing trademarks
• Please include a 50-100 word rationale explaining your theme choice
• Consider other organizations in the residences, including C-Store, day care, ESL, External Relations, Graduate Studies, and more.

Here’s some food for thought: the University of Regina was originally known as Regina College. Later it was known as the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan.

When plans were being drawn up for a new campus in the 1960s, principal Dr. John Archer said the campus needed a new, distinctive name to demonstrate greater autonomy.

Possible names that were mentioned included Dumont University, Regina University, University of the Plains, Wascana University and even Pile-o’-Bones University.
All submissions will be reviewed by a committee that will then make recommendations to the President, who will have the final say on the names.

The deadline is April 30, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. and the winning submissions will receive an Apple iPad Air.
Submissions can be made online or by completing the contest form.PDF icon
