A packed Conexus Arts Centre had the opportunity to hear from one of the world’s premiere management consultants.

Dominic Barton, the Global Managing Partner Emeritus of the world’s largest consulting firm, McKinsey & Company, was the keynote speaker at the 45th Annual Hill Dinner, held October 30. Presented by the Hill Business Students’ Society and the Hill School of Business, the event has become one of the province’s foremost business networking events, attracting more than 600 students, business, and community leaders. In the past, the event has hosted high-profile guests including CEOs from Sony, Coca-Cola, WestJet, and The Home Depot.

“It was a tremendous honour to have Dominic Barton speak at our event,” said Angela Chernick, business student and event co-chair. “He is a very accomplished business professional and shared an inspiring messaging to all attendees”.

Students were given the opportunity to rub shoulders with business leaders, and potential employers, at a cocktail reception prior to the main event.

“It gives members of the business community the chance to meet our award-winning students and recruit new talent,” said Dr. Gina Grandy, Dean of the Hill School of Business.

Students are then matched with business leaders for the dinner portion of the event. Companies purchase tables and are seated with undergraduates based on major. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of their career options post-convocation.

“This is an amazing opportunity for students to grow their networks; our community and province are stronger because of it,” said Grandy.

New to the event this year is the presentation of the HILL (Honouring Integrity, Legacy and Leadership) Award. This award was created to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of business leaders.

“Recipients of the award lead by example. They stand out because they create positive change,” said Calysta Springer, business student and event co-chair.

Dominic Barton was not only the event’s keynote speaker, but also the recipient of the inaugural HILL Award. In his address, he encourages students to always embrace challenges, invest in people, and be genuine. “It’s not about what you know, it’s who you are.”
