U of R pilot project makes it quicker, easier for students to transfer credits

The University of Regina’s Registrar’s Office is working with the Hill School of Business and the Faculty of Science on a transfer credit pilot project that will benefit newly admitted students coming to the U of R from other post-secondary institutions. Through the pilot project, these students can receive a preliminary transfer credit assessment within two weeks of their offer of admission.

University of Regina Registrar James D’Arcy says a quicker  assessment not only saves students time and money by getting credit for courses they have previously taken, but it helps them to see how their transferred courses fit into what’s required for their U of R program.

“The goal of this project is to centralize the transfer credit function and provide new students transferring from other post-secondary institutions with information that will help them make informed course registration decisions upon being admitted to the U of R,” says D’Arcy

Wendy Preikchat is the Assistant Registrar and lead of the transfer credit pilot project. Preikchat and her project team began to develop the new transfer credit process in the Fall of 2020 by looking at system capabilities, mapping out the assessment process, and cataloguing the many transfer courses. In January they began to use the new credit transfer process for new students in the Hill School of Business and Faculty of Science.

The preliminary transfer credit assessment identifies all of a student’s eligible transferable courses, which, in most cases, also reduces the need to reassess if a student changes faculties. It also includes information on courses that are not eligible for transfer and those where more information (course outlines, etc.) is required to proceed with an assessment.

Students can then use the Advisor tool to see how their transfer credits will fit in their chosen program, as well as how they will fit within faculty-based regulations of residency, minimum grade, and date of completion. The preliminary transfer credit assessment, combined with the Advisor tool, enables students to see their progress toward a U of R credential before they even register or attend an advising session.

"It's important to recognize students for their previous academic achievements and demonstrate how that hard work can benefit their future here at the University of Regina,” says Preikchat. “The work we have done on the transfer credit process supports students to see and plan for that future."

The pilot project has focused on transferring credits from equivalent courses at other post-secondary institutions across Canada, however the majority of those credits have been transferred from other Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions. Currently, U of R subject matter experts have evaluated approximately 3,000 courses in total from the University of Saskatchewan (1,716), Saskatchewan Polytechnic (869), Briercrest College (307), and Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (108) that are recognized at the U of R for transfer credit.

Over the past five years, the U of R has awarded over 80,000 credit hours to students who have transferred to the U of R from other Saskatchewan post-secondary institutions. This represents an overall tuition savings of over $18.3 million for those students.

The Hill School of Business and the Faculty of Science were chosen for the pilot project due to the high level of transfer recognition they offer. The Registrar’s Office anticipates that this project will be expanded to other faculties and the federated colleges in the coming months, with a full implementation expected this Fall.
