Ven Begamudré was born in South India and came to Canada when he was six. He has an honours degree in public administration and a master of fine arts in creative writing. He has held numerous residencies and was the 1996 Canada-Scotland Exchange Writer-in-Residence. His work has appeared in Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, and Scotland. He lives in Regina, Saskatchewan, and has lived in a number of countries including Bali. In Extended Families, his ninth book, he is moved by a trip back to India to explore the history of his unusual family. Through journal entries, memoirs, fiction, poetry and photographs, he reconstructs the story of a South Indian family of Brahmins with a colourful past: they guarded a treasury, built dams and power stations, and became electrical engineers and politicians. Extended Families is more than a memoir. It is a graceful look back at the pull of culture and place on one man's life.
