"Philosophy and the Good Life", by Dr. Dustin Olson, Sessional Instructor in Philosophy at the University of Regina

Contemporary academic philosophy, highly esoteric, at times eccentric, appears to have little bearing on practical life. As an intellectual endeavour, it can easily come across as quixotic, inert, or even obsolete. What, then, is the point of philosophy? An historical response, now out of fashion, is that philosophy can reveal the means for living a good life. In the spirit of this response, I want to distinguish doing academic philosophy from being philosophically minded. Being philosophically minded begins with forming a philosophical attitude, characterized by rational incredulity, intellectual honesty, the desire to know, and the courage to follow the evidence. When exercised, these intellectual virtues can bring into harmony seemingly disparate features of the human experience such as instinct, intellect, and spirit. Such harmony serves as an emollient to the human condition and encourages human flourishing in general. If we aspire to living good lives both collectively and as individuals, becoming philosophically minded should be our leading pursuit.
