At the beginning of each semester, UR International welcomes a representative from Service Canada to help issue Social Insurance Numbers on the spot for new international students!

Documents to Bring

Valid Study Permit
Valid Passport
Proof of Canadian Address

Important

Your study permit must have one of the following conditions printed in order to be eligible for a Social Insurance Number (SIN).

May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186(f), (v) or (w). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.
This permit does not authorize the holder to engage in off campus employment in Canada. May accept employment only on campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186(f). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.

If your study permit does not have one of these conditions printed, you will not be eligible to work in Canada or obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Visit UR International Student Services for more information if this situation applies to you.
