Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) Program

Global Skills Opportunity is a national outbound student mobility program that is expected to enable more than 16,000 Canadian college and undergraduate-level university students from across the country to acquire the global skills employers want and the Canadian economy needs. A key component of the Government of Canada's International Education Strategy, Global Skills Opportunity is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada and is administered jointly by Colleges and Institutes Canada and Universities Canada.

Through this partnership, UR International is proud to share that our Canadian undergraduate students will benefit from a total of $1 million in combined contributions from the Government of Canada and the University of Regina. This program funding will be used for direct student funding, nuanced wraparound supports and services, and program administration for Global Skills Opportunity international mobility experiences, starting Winter 2022 through Winter 2025. The Global Skills Opportunity program will support students with such experiences as: international exchange, internship, practicum fieldwork, study tour, and international research programs.

While open to all Canadian post-secondary students, the national program targets groups for whom international experiences have traditionally been less accessible - specifically Indigenous students, students from low-income backgrounds and students with disabilities. It also aims to diversify destination countries where Canadian students pursue international learning, by emphasizing non-traditional countries, which includes countries outside of France, United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.

Compared to other nations, fewer Canadian students participate in work or study abroad experiences during their post-secondary career. The Global Skills Opportunity program stands to change that. By working together with Universities Canada, UR International is implementing innovative solutions to minimize the barriers to participation, to expand the horizons of Canadian students, and to improve Canada's competitiveness on the world stage.

Internationalization starts at home. UR International hopes to empower our campus community as a whole, by making international opportunities more accessible to our students. With the Global Skills Opportunity program, UR International will be at the front line of opening the global door for students who have been traditionally less represented in the international education arena. Students will realize life-changing experiences, while gaining intercultural connections, competencies, and skills that will serve them, the community, and the world at large. The Global Skills Opportunity program similarly contributes to the University of Regina's Strategic Plan (2020-2025) and Saskatchewan's provincial Post-Secondary International Education Strategy.
