Playwrights Reading Series: Robert Chafe

Robert Chafe will be reading from his recent dramatic work.

Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Chafe has written 18 stage plays and co-authored another eight. His work has been seen across Canada, the UK, Australia and in the United States. His plays include Charismatic Death Scenes, Tempting Providence, Butler’s Marsh, Afterimage, and Oil and Water.

In 1998 he was named Emerging Artist of the Year by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. Since then he has won numerous awards.  He was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Drama for Tempting Providence and Butler’s Marsh in 2004, and won the award for Afterimage in 2010.

Tempting Providence is entering its eleventh year of Canadian and international touring, and Chafe is currently working on a film adaptation.

One of his more recent plays, Oil and Water, is about the USS Truxton disaster and the African-American survivor Lanier Phillips, whose life was changed as a result of the kindness and hospitality of the people of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland.

Chafe is the Artistic Director and playwright for Artist Fraud, a Newfoundland theatre company. He is the 2013 writer in residence at Memorial University.
