Erin Shields will be reading from her recent dramatic work.
The Toronto based playwright and actor won the 2011 Governor General's Award for her play If We Were Birds. She has been nominated for numerous awards including the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the KM Hunter Award and five Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
Shields trained in acting at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in London, England. She is a founding member of Groundwater Productions through which she creates, develops and produces much of her work, including If We Were Birds. The play garnered two Dora Awards and received rave reviews for her poetic retelling of the Philomela and Tereus myth as a commentary on “the brutality inflicted on women in wars over the past century.” If We Were Birds is now being translated into French, German and Italian.
Shields’ other plays include Barrel Crank, Montparnasse, The Unfortunate Misadventures of Masha Galinski, and The Epic of Gilgamesh. Her latest play, Soliciting Temptation, is part of the 2013-2014 season at Tarragon Theatre, where she is the playwright in residence.
The reading is open to the public free of charge. For more information contact the Theatre Department at 306-585-5562.
