Thu., Nov. 2, 2017 7:30 p.m. - Sat., Nov. 4, 2017 9:00 p.m.

Location: Shubox Theatre, Riddell Centre

The University of Regina Theatre Department is proud to showcase its production of Antigone, directed by Kelly Handerek. The upcoming play interprets the changing political and social landscape of today’s world, with a unique voice and point of view.

Antigone will be presented as a chamber production and will showcase an original design by Professor Wes Pearce. Professor Pearce will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Regina’s Theatre Department, in recognition of his career accomplishments.

Inspired from Greek history and tragedy, the University of Regina’s performance of Antigone is enriched with vibrant costumes and intricate design. Set in 441 BC, this tragedy is ironically as relevant in the present as it was in the era it was first conceived.

Antigone is the third Theban play about a sister’s struggle for her brother’s burial, her challenges with the systems in authority and the fight for justice against the hierarchy. Coloured with universal themes, this 2017 production of Antigone explores the issues of understanding personal rights and rebellion perspectives.

Amongst the many accomplishments of Professor Kelly Handerek, Antigone has been one of his true passions. Handerek is thrilled to have a cast comprised of a wide range of actors from various faculties including Arts, Education, and Media, Art, and Performance.
