On the final day of the Journalism 320 semester class, the classroom hums with energy. Students race to deadline, refine stories, and work shoulder to shoulder in a space that feels more like a bustling newsroom than a traditional classroom.
At the centre of it all are Darrell and Austin Davis, a father-and-son teaching team whose shared passion for journalism is shaping the next generation of storytellers.
Darrell brings decades of experience as a sportswriter and columnist, while Austin offers a contemporary perspective, grounded in digital reporting and modern newsroom demands. Together, they provide students with a rare blend of insight, bridging journalism’s storied past and its fast-paced present in real time.
Their dynamic goes beyond the curriculum. It’s rooted in mentorship, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the craft, something students quickly recognize as they develop their own skills within the School of Journalism.
For both instructors, the classroom is more than a place to teach. It’s a place where journalism is lived, challenged, and passed on.
