Kelly Wiebe is being recognized for his hard work in athletics. The University of Regina Engineering graduate has been nominated as Sask Sport’s Male Athlete of the Year.

“I am extremely honoured and humbled by the nomination,” says Wiebe who is from Swift Current and is now in Australia training for some major track competitions including the World Cross Country Championships in China. “The best part about training at the U of R was the camaraderie within the track and field team and within the athletics department as a whole. My coaches always supported me. My teammates at the U of R were second to none. Their passion, drive, and determination really pushed me to get the most out of myself.”

As for the nomination, Wiebe is competing against Lucas Makowsky (speed skating) and Mark McMorris (snowboarding). The winner will be announced Jan 29.

Wiebe’s accomplishments have already been recognized by the University of Regina. Among the accolades, Wiebe was named 2012 U of R’s Male Athlete of the Year and he received the 2012 University President’s Award.

“I was just as passionate about my academics as I was with my athletics,” says Wiebe who has a degree in Engineering with a major in Environmental Systems.

“The Engineering program really taught me to think outside the box, question ideas and thoughts rather than just accept them as the truth,” says Wiebe.

“The professors had a recognizable degree of care at the U of R which was evident in the way they taught and the way they involved the students in the learning. I came away from the U of R with an engineering degree but also a sense of confidence that I could succeed as an engineer with the lessons I learned in school.”

Student success is a focus of the University of Regina’s Strategic Plan.
