The University of Regina’s men’s sports teams are working together to take a stand against violence.

Man Up Against Violence is back on campus March 23 to March 26 with a series of events that examines the prevalence of violence in our society and the role we all can play to reduce violent offenses.

The week features screenings of the acclaimed documentary The Mask You Live In, which examines the challenges of growing up male in America.

The awareness campaign at the U of R culminates with keynote speaker Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL linebacker who is widely sought after for his anti-violence message.

The university sports teams say it is critical to take the lead in this initiative.

“It’s the right thing to do. This is a great thing the university is doing.
I wanted our football team to be involved in this and the response from the players has been outstanding.”
- Mike Gibson – Coach,  Rams football team

“Man Up Against Violence is not just about violence, it’s about gender equality. As athletes, we are in a position in which younger kids- both boys and girls - look up to us. By stepping forward as leaders, we are essentially helping to break down some of the barriers and constructs that perpetuate gender inequality, which is very important moving forward as a society.”
- Addison Docherty – assistant coach and past player, Cougars men’s basketball

“The Man Up Against Violence event provides our team an opportunity to increase our understanding and challenge themselves to look at their own behaviour and actions. Through this education we can continue to be positive role models.”
- Steve Burrows - Head Coach, Cougars men’s basketball

“The members of the Cougar men's hockey team are mentors to so many young players and students in our city. Man Up Against Violence is a great way for us to become educated to promote a healthy lifestyle.”
- Todd Johnson – Coach, Cougars men’s hockey team

The Chair and Founder of the Man Up Against Violence, Roz Kelsey in the Faculty of Kinesiology says “The University of Regina is working as a community leader to impact and sustain a shift in societal attitudes with respect to addressing unhealthy notions of gender."
