International night attracts huge crowd on campus celebrating diversity

The annual International Night was once again a huge hit on campus.

More than 1600 people packed the gym March 3 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport at the U of R.  The evening was emceed by Jermain McKenzie, president of the University of Regina Students’ Union.

The evening was organized by UR International and the International Students Association. It featured a variety of international cuisine, performances, a cultural fashion show, international displays and the U of R Student Idol competition.

“International Night is a time to showcase and bring together all of the wonderful aspects of cultural diversity that we have on campus,” says Waleed Iftikhar from the Pakistan International Students’ Association, and International Peer Advisor Executive. “This event has become an icon within the campus community as a time to come together and celebrate our campus as a whole.”

This annual event has also attracted support from the community. The sponsors included CIBC, India Palace Restaurant and Wascana Driving School.

“The University of Regina is a home for many students, from within Saskatchewan to all over the world,” says Sua Park who is from South Korea and President of the International Students’ Association. “I have been looking forward to attending International Night because it is a time when I am reminded of the open and welcoming environment that our campus has. There is pride that I feel when I walk into International Night and see all of our cultures coming together to celebrate this spectacular multicultural event.”

The successful event received additional sponsorship from UR International, the Confucius Institute, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and the U of R Students’ Union.

The University of Regina is a diverse campus. It continues to attract more students from around the world. More than 2,000 students from dozens of countries choose to take classes at the U of R, representing around 14 percent of the student population.
