They bought coffee for total strangers, offered others free donuts and even plugged expired meters.

Students from the UR Guarantee office got into the spirit of Random Acts of Kindness Week, which officially begins February 14.

“It was exhilarating to pop into the daily routines of U of R students and staff with simple, kind gestures and watch their smiles grow,” says Danae LeDrew, a third year Kinesiology/Education student and coordinator of the event.

The students spanned the campus February 10.  Some offered free timbits and exam goodie bags to fellow students and paid for coffees for those in a lineup at a couple of the campus coffee shops. Flowers were sent to surprised staff members and that was just a sampling of what was happening that day.

The acts of kindness spread outdoors as well, as students with a pocket full of change, plugged parking meters whose time had expired. Most of the beneficiaries of this kindness probably didn’t even know it but one driver happened to spot this generous act and posted his thoughts on the U of R Facebook page.

“I had two people plug my parking meter in front of me. They were angels! Awesome! Thanks guys!”

UR Guarantee plans on making this an annual event. The only request is that those on the receiving end of a random act of kindness pay it forward.

“My favorite reaction I received all day was when we gave a present to this one lady and she was so grateful it appeared as if she was going to cry tears of joy,” says Melanie Chodak, a third year Social Work student and an organizing committee member. “She truly appreciated the random act of kindness which seemed to make her day.”

During Random Acts of Kindness Week, the students are asking everybody on campus to do or say something nice and feel free to post it on Twitter using hashtag: #UofRraks or send an email to urg.events@uregina.ca sharing with us your thoughts on random acts of kindness.
