U of R’s Fall 2017 Open House (Sat., Oct.14, 9 a.m - 3:30 p.m.) promises to be an info-packed day where prospective students (parents are welcome) can tour the campus, meet faculty and staff, and discover the long list of helpful student services offered.

Eligible students may even be admitted on the spot (and save $30), receive automatic entrance scholarships (we’ll even throw in a pair of prized limited edition U of R mittens). In order to apply on the spot, Grade 12 students need to be sure to bring their unofficial early conditional transcript with them (high school guidance counsellors can assist with this) and $70 for the application fee.

“We want to make applying to the U of R as stress-free as possible,” says Shayla Dietrich, Manager, Recruitment and Marketing at the U of R. “Open House 2017 is all about helping prospective students get all the answers they need.”

Dietrich says the day-long event usually attracts upwards of 1,000 eager guests (students and family members). At Open House 2016, more than 400 students successfully applied that day, had their applications accepted on the spot, and each received $30 off their application fee (and, of course, their very own pair of those coveted U of R mittens).

“Applying on the spot takes the wait out of the application process for most programs. Instead of taking weeks to hear back, students know that day if they have been accepted,” says Dietrich. “And throughout the day, they can get answers to their questions about U of R programs, courses, services, student housing, and even scholarships.”

When eligible students find out that they qualify for an automatic scholarship, the reactions can range from surprise to outright joy. Depending on the situation, students could be offered up to $4,000 right then and there.

Students interested in competitive entry programs (nursing and education) are still encouraged to attend. Students can be admitted to their second choice faculty, hear about scholarships, and receive the perks of applying that day.
Break-out sessions, offered four times throughout the day, provide great opportunities for prospective students to find out more about the U of R’s 10 faculties, as well as tips on how to be successful at university.

Out-of-town students can arrange to spend the night for free in on-campus housing and get an up-close sense of campus life.
