Welcome Weekend is almost here! It’s the most exciting time of the year for U of R students (besides Christmas break) and this year’s weekend is jam-packed with in-person and online events that will help U of R students get acquainted (or re-acquainted) with the U of R campus community, have some fun, and meet new friends.
We sat down with Welcome Weekend organizer Bryan Wilson to find out the top five in-person and online events that students need to know about.

1. Outdoor concert and movie night
Craving a concert? Us too! Local party band The New Montagues will be playing on the Field 2 stage (U of R Cougars and Rams practice field) on Saturday night. Following the concert, there will be an outdoor showing of Bill & Ted Face the Music, so bring your dancing shoes and be excellent to each other!
2. Willow Island adventure afternoon
On Sunday afternoon, take a nature walk (or bus) over to scenic Willow Island on Wascana Lake (right next to the University!). You can enjoy the bon-fire, challenge your buds to a game of corn hole, or just relax and take in the beautiful sights of one of North America’s largest urban parks.
3. Escape rooms presented by Mystery Mansion
Need to warm up your strategic thinking skills before classes resume? Try an escape room on Sunday! Work together to solve tricky puzzles and riddles to escape the room before time is up. Think you can do it?

4. Outdoor sports
Are physical challenges more your thing? There will be plenty of sports to try on all three days of Welcome Weekend like beach volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, and way more. Just remember to stretch and hydrate!
5. Knocker Balls
The pinnacle of human engineering and science…Knocker Balls. One on one with your friends (or enemies) in the ultimate test of physical strength and endurance…or just roll around aimlessly in the grass. The Knocker Balls are thoroughly sanitized between each turn so hop in and go crazy!
Top 5 Welcome Weekend Events – Online
1. Beading workshop
Pick up your supplies from the University and tune in (whenever you want) to a virtual beading lesson from local Métis artist, Sarah Timewell. Learn traditional beading techniques and make your very own artistic keepsake. Who knows, maybe it will become your next hobby/obsession!

2. Online escape rooms presented by Mystery Mansion
What better way to prepare for your remote learning classes than doing a challenging virtual escape room? Get ready to put your heads together to solve the room – just make sure you’re not muted!
3. Nailed It! Cake Design Competition
Do you have what it takes to bake a cake? Take a break for goodness’ sake and partake! Just don’t submit a fake or you’ll be thrown in Wascana Lake. A winner will be chosen at random and will take home a mini Instant Pot!
4. E-sports Tournaments
Whether you prefer to score goals with your feet or in the driver’s seat, you can show off your skills (or try for the first time) at the Rocket League tournament on Friday or the FIFA tournament on Sunday. Plus, there’s some pretty cool prizes from Comic Readers up for grabs.
5. UR Fit Classes (sponsored by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies)
Get a workout in and get familiar with all the different fitness options available to students on campus. You can go for a swim at the U of R’s pool, find your zen at a yoga class, or even take a line dancing lesson. There’s tons of ways for U of R students to stay fit on campus and this is a great way to check them all out.
Honourable Mention
Whether you’re participating virtually or on campus, everyone can take part in the photo scavenger hunt. All participants will have a chance to win an Instax mini Polaroid camera!
This list is just a taste of all the fun things to do this Welcome Weekend, for a full schedule of events and details, head to www.uregina.ca/orientation. See you there!
