City of Regina

Regina is the capital of Saskatchewan and the 16th largest city in Canada with a population of 226,404 (2021 Census). Regina was established on a treeless grass prairie. Today, the city covers an area of 182.42 square kilometers and our urban forest is lush in green spaces and has over 500,000 hand planted trees maintained by the City as well as residents for all to enjoy. Regina became a city in 1903. Two years later, Saskatchewan became a province and chose Regina as its capital. It is known for its rich frontier heritage, sunny prairie climate, and deep ties to Canadian arts, culture, and sports. Regina is located on Treaty 4 territory, the traditional lands of the nêhiyawak, Anihšināpēk, Dakota, Lakota, Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis. Before it was settled in 1882, the area was temporarily called "Pile O' Bones" because of the large piles of buffalo bones left by hunters before they were shipped east for fertilizer.
