The Owl may be acting like Hollywood North this Saturday, when film students showcase their work by holding a glamorous, Oscar-themed event. There will be a red carpet as guests arrive and photographers will be on hand.

Film Gala
“Everyone will have the opportunity to walk down the red carpet to feel like a star,” explains Zach Almond, the president of the Film Students’ Association.

The public is invited to this formal event to see some of the top student films, which will be screened that evening.

“There will be three films screened over the course of the ceremony. All of them are products of the 12 hour film challenge that was a week before this. They range from mockumentary to thriller to comedy. It’s a really nice combination of well-made films under such a tight deadline,” Almond says.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by comedians Harris Khan and Tamara Hameluck. As well, there will be food and drink, a trivia contest and prizes.

“We wanted to create an event that students could work towards as a group and share in the celebration of their success. It gives people a chance to dress up and have a really fun night right before the mad scramble of midterm season,” says Almond.

This is the first time this event is being held, and Almond says, “It’s open to the public, and we strongly encourage people to come and take this in. We’re hoping that this year is successful enough that we can make it a continual thing in the years to come.”
